Applying for a building permit in Western Australia

The Building Act 2011 and the Building Regulations 2012, regulate the building permit application process in WA. These regulations state that builders in Western Australia must get a Certificate of Design Compliance (CDC) from a registered building surveyor before they can receive an approved building permit and start work.

You can apply for a Certificate of Design Compliance at two stages

You can apply for the CDC at two stages, either before (certified) or after (uncertified) you submit your building permit application.

1. Before applying for a building permit (Certified CDC application)

This is where a registered building surveyor certifies that your proposed designs comply with the relevant statutory requirements and issue the CDC before you lodge a building permit application

2. After applying for a building permit (Uncertified CDC application)

Here your authority certifies the designs after you’ve submitted a building permit application.

By getting a CDC before you apply for your building permit you will speed up your permit application time. The Regulations require that certified applications be processed within 10 business days, while an uncertified CDC can take up to 25 business days. This can potentially save you up to 2 weeks in valuable building time.
